In February 2025, I directed The Laramie Project as a part of the Otterbein Theatre and Dance mainstage season. This play centers on the town of Laramie, Wyoming as it reckons with the brutal murder of Matthew Shepard, a young gay man, in 1998.
Our team had the opportunity to translate this often intimately-staged verbatim work to the large Cowan Hall proscenium, and to bridge the gap between the late 90s and our modern moment. In so doing, we were able to explore the extensive power of theatre to cultivate listening, as well as the ways our culture has and has not changed since Matthew's death sparked a national uproar.
